Kevin Purcell’s Doctoral Dissertation

This page is dedicated to the Doctor of Ministry Dissertation, which I completed in May of 2005 at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. I can recommend the preaching program at GCTS whole heartedly. I studied with Dr. Haddon Robinson, who was at that time the Harold J. Ockenga Chairman of Expository Preaching and the Director of the program. He has written numerous books. His most significant work was his book entitled Biblical Preaching.

My project for my D. Min. Thesis was a workshop on how to effectively use Multimedia in Expository Preaching. I am willing to come and teach this workshop for your group for the cost of travel and a small stipend. The workshop focuses first on why it is important to use multimedia. Second we talk about some of the strategies for studying the bible in order to better use multimedia. We then practice it in real world examples. The workshop is about four hours.

The content of my five chapter Thesis is as follows:

Chapter One: Introduction of the Problem.

Chapter Two: The Theological Foundation for Using Multimedia in Expository Preaching. I survey how visual communication takes place in the various portions of the Bible. I also discuss the importance of communicating to people in a way that fits them best. I argue that using some kind of multimedia today is of utmost importance to biblically communicate to our culture. This chapter has some biblical arguments that can be used in educating people who are not used to the use of multimedia.

Chapter Three: This is a survey of some of the literature regarding communicating to today’s Post Modern generation. I then look at strategies for using multimedia. We also look at some of the technology involved in today’s use of multimedia. One could read this chapter and learn a great deal about how to begin using multimedia in a church where it has not been used.

Chapter Four: This is the content of the workshop as it was first presented to a group of pastors in my community. I have since tweaked and improved it.

Chapter Five: Conclusions and findings from my study and research.
